By way of a metaphor, when you are facing stress in your family, follow the instructions of airline stewardesses regarding what to do if the airplane depressurizes: adults are to put on their own masks FIRST, and then attend to their children. If YOU are the one in stress in the family, deal with YOUR stress first! You’ll be far better able to deal with the stress your children are either experiencing or causing.

We are not speaking of stress management. Rather, we are talking about a natural process in all of us to UPROOT our stress. Stress management, unless you deal with the underlying source of your stress, is like putting your stress on hold. With the right trigger, you could “St. Helen’s” over everybody! When you learn how to uproot your own stress, you will have the skill to help your children uproot theirs! [Dealing with your children’s stress is the subject for Part 10.]
