Bilingual Parenting

Dr. Brewer and her husband, [and he has a PhD as well], made the decision to raise their children speaking two languages. From the birth of their first son, she has never spoken English to him or any of the other five boys. Bruce speaks only English to them. What a delight to hear them converse equally well in both languages. One of the byproducts is the desire of their boys to learn OTHER languages as well. Their eldest son [age 17] speaks four languages and will be starting a fifth this fall! All of them have no evident fears in reaching out for knowledge. She references the academic edge children have who are exposed to a second language. What is most evident is the love for learning and the climate she and her husband have created for their children.
