Helping Children Think Outside the Box; Understanding Choice & Agency; & The Ability to Forecast

The principle being introduced here is number four: Commitment to Agency. All too frequently we set out the RULES, and then when it looks like the children are not going to adhere to them, we take back the reins and make sure they can’t screw up. How often, when our children ask us the WHY question, do we curtly respond with “Because I said so!” Or “Because I’m the DAD, that’s why!” How can our children learn when we maintain total control? Why is it that we spend so little time teaching and so much time preaching? We expect our children to follow the rules, but we do little to help them understand why rules are put in place.
Man’s basic drive is to be free to make his own decisions. We need to be looking at our children’s world through THEIR windows, not just our own. If we teach well, they’ll see through OUR windows. Both parents and children need to look through the window of PRINCIPLE.
