Commitment to GROWTH—The Transferring of Responsibility from a Temporary Steward to the Rightful steward

Hosts: Kenneth H. Patey, Sharon Patey
Commitment to GROWTH is principle number three.  We’d all like our children to turn out to be responsible adults.  We even hope that they’ll be responsible CHILDREN!  Much of what has to occur in parenting is both the timely and the appropriate transferring of responsibility.   Parents, teachers, and leaders are all temporary stewards.  Our children, or those in our charge, are the RIGHTFUL stewards.    The challenge is to know when to remove the protective barriers we put in place to protect them while they are acquiring the skills to protect themselves.  In this segment, we look at what must take place in the developmental process regarding what our children are to accomplish.  We‘ll use Erickson’s age and stage theory to accomplish this.

Children are to develop TRUST, AUTONOMY, INITIATIVE, INDUSTRY, and to DEFINE WHO THEY ARE FOR THEMSELVES.  Are we helping them in this process, or are we stifling the very things we ought to be assisting them with?
